“Tell Me Your Dreams” is a novel that concerns with crime and psychological disorder. A crime where three young ladies are suspected as murderers for the death of five men who are stabbed and castrated. It turns out that Ashley, Toni and Alette are actually one. They have found out that Ashley has Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) and she doesn’t have a clue about it. MPD is now called as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).
DID is characterized as atleast two identities which are actually in one body. Those identities are called as Alters. Alters have their own personality. They alternately take control of an individual’s body. The person also experiences memory loss that is too extensive to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness. In the case of Ashley, her Alters are Toni Prescott and Alette Peters. There can be many alters in one body. It can be up to a hundred. It also takes years to cure DID. It varies on how many alters are there. It cannot be understand how a person develop DID but some reports are caused by severe physical and sexual abuse, particularly in childhood. A person creates an alter to defend him/herself or to forget the trauma. Some alters know each other and sometimes not. To cure this, the person and and the alters should become one like all identities joins together to be a one person. In this book, they used hypnotism to cure Ashley.
Ashley experienced sexual abuse from her Father. It is the cause of her condition. She was involve in a crime where Toni Prescott is the killer. Toni Prescott only did it because she wants to protect Ashley and Alette. In the novel, many people don’t know anything about DID so it was hard to convince the jury during the trial of Ashley. Thanks to David Singer, she was proven innocent. She was assigned to a mental hospital, to cure her, after the trial. Dr Gilbert Keller helped Ashley to be cured.
People with this condition should not be treated as crazy. They are victims. These people needs help and they should be treated fairly.
